Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is seeking to fill the vacancy of School Crossing Guard.
Under the general direction of the School Crossing Regional Supervisor, performs work of routine difficulty in assisting school children and other pedestrian traffic across streets at designated intersections. Members are expected to maintain an alert attitude to prevent/avoid hazardous traffic situations. Work is reviewed through observation and results obtained.
SUPERVISES OTHERS: No
- Monitors the crossing of streets during the hours when children are going to and returning from school
- Assures the safety of children who have to cross hazardous streets
- Sets out cones in designated school zone areas
- Assists in school safety programs
- Regular and reliable attendance is required as an essential function of the position
- This position may be considered essential and, in the event of an emergency or natural disaster, may be required to report to work
- Participates in Sheriff's Office recruitment and community relations activities as directed

Qualifications As outlined under Section 7D.03 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicles
- Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle's STOP message during the entire crossing movement
- Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously
- Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury
- An overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Knowledge of basic traffic laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to school zones
- Good physical condition and dependability

Physical Abilities The physical abilities listed below are requirements to perform the essential functions and responsibilities
- Meet the minimum hearing and vision requirements as follows:
- Have 20/30 (or better) corrected vision
- Must pass hearing with less than or equal to 40 decibels in each ear under the frequencies: 500hz, 1,000hz and 2,000hz
- Stand up to 1 hour per day
- Walk up to 1 hour per day
- Lift up to 10 lbs.
- Bend, squat, reach, kneel and twist
- Exposure to temperature extremes
This position is eligible for participation in the Florida Retirement System (FRS). Members will receive information from FRS within the first few months of employment to help determine which of the two plans best fits the members needs. Under each plan, members contribute a small percentage of their gross salary and Pinellas County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) contributes a percentage, as well.
