Description
FOR USE BY UAB IT ONLY: The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a MANAGER-TELECOM INSIDE & OUTSIDE PLANT-ENT to oversee the planning, design, and implementation of telecommunications infrastructure projects. This role serves as the primary liaison between internal departments, external partners, and contractors. The manager ensures compliance with institutional standards while managing staff performance, project documentation, and construction coordination for both Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) systems.
Responsibilities include:
- Supervising design professionals, drafting, and administrative staff in project implementation, including document review, budgeting, and coordination of design and construction. Developing and monitoring project schedules and standards.
- Serving as the internal consultant for all telecommunications OSP and ISP projects, responsible for design, estimating, scheduling, installation, and inspection. Maintaining project records, as-built drawings, and facility details.
- Acting as the primary interface between telecommunications and other departments, external architects, engineers, city planning, and utilities.
- Developing bid documents, coordinating bidding processes, verifying items, and managing procurement and construction estimating.
- Inspecting job sites, reviewing work for compliance, and coordinating construction activities, utility interruptions, and project updates.
- Assisting with design reviews for compliance and developing methods to streamline documentation processes.
- Overseeing department performance indicators and conducting annual staff evaluations.
- Identifying needs for outside consultants and developing technical standards for telecommunications facilities.
- Fostering an environment of heightened security, participating in security training, and complying with relevant policies.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Technology, Electrical or Construction Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field, with at least seven (7) years of relevant experience. Work experience may not substitute for educational requirements.

- Ability to manage multiple projects and maintain positive relationships
Preferred Skills: Credential as a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) by BICSI is strongly preferred. Experience managing ISP/OSP projects, advanced telecom system knowledge, project management skills, and management experience are a plus.
